Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Without Teachers, A Classroom is Just a Room

Today kicks off the first day of one of the most dynamic education conferences in the nation, South by Southwest Edu (SXSWedu). The conference will conclude on Thursday with a keynote speech from Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Bill Gates’ name is already synonymous with technology innovation and philanthropy and, driven by the work of the Gates Foundation, education is clearly a personal priority,” said Ron Reed, executive producer of SXSWedu. “Gates’ background as a global business executive and leading philanthropist gives him a unique vantage point into education, one we know will be eagerly received by SXSWedu attendees.”

For a quick dose of inspiration, watch this video (produced by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) titled, “Teachers at Their Best,” which reminds us that “it is a teacher who brings passion, knowledge, and dedication. It is a teacher who makes a difference in our students’ success.”

If you can’t attend SXSWedu this year, you can still watch the keynote speeches on SXSWedu Live. Also, be sure to subscribe to Navigator, as we’ll be covering sessions, panel discussions, and social events (use hashtag #SocialEdu13 on Twitter).

I applaud his commitment and gifts to K12. He needs to talk to a few more Teachers-at Their Best and get his compass reset.

Answers do not lie in more standardized testing.
