Compass Learning Cares Week

Caritas of AustinBeing on the organization team of Compass Learning Cares Week was one of my most rewarding experiences ever. Working specifically with Caritas of Austin and Candlelight Ranch, I was awestruck by the hard work, commitment, and dedication these people have. I consider it a privilege to have been able to work alongside the staff and my co-workers to help in some small way. As a great by-product, this allowed me to get to know some of my co-workers that I had not known before.

It reaffirmed my opinion that Compass Learning truly hires great people. And speaking of those great people, where’s what they had to say about volunteering:

“Spending just half a day in the Caritas Community Kitchen gave me a tremendous respect for what its staff and volunteers do for the hungry and homeless of Austin every single day. The food was nutritious and fresh, the atmosphere was warm, and the volunteers were generous and kind. We served more than 400 people in an hour and half. It was both heartwarming and eye-opening.” -Kathi Whitley, marketing department.

“At Caritas, it’s truly amazing how a handful of people come together on a daily basis to make it all happen. All I kept thinking about as we did all the prep work in the morning was, ‘Wow. What happens when they don’t have volunteers show up?’ I was glad we were able to help. It was a very emotionally rewarding experience. And at Candlelight Ranch on Friday, there were different projects for us to pick from and I chose the garden project. I could not believe how much we accomplished in one day! All of the other groups did as well. This place provides kids with disabilities or at-risk kids an opportunity to attend camp. At both volunteer outings, it was wonderful to spend time with colleagues; getting to know each other better while giving back to the community was great.” -Chris Castillo, human resources department.

“Volunteering at CandleLight Ranch was truly an uplifting experience for me as a Compass Learning employee! In one day, we made a lasting impact on the retreat’s infrastructure. The kid’s will enjoy the fruit of our efforts for many years to come. The icing-on-the-cake was when we got to play on the retreat’s zip-line… and for many it was their 1st time ever!” -Edgar Gresores, sound engineer, production department.

Other organizations we helped during Compass Learning’s annual week of volunteering were the Austin Animal Center and Austin Sunshine Camps. Employees that do not live in the Austin, Texas area were asked to donate time to their favorite local charity.
