Admittedly, I am an avid morning television talk show devotee, and never more so than when conversations turn toward education reform to showcase public perception of how simplistic viewers believe this task could really be. Those of us that have worked in public education for the better part of our professional careers, however, fully understand the complexities of the education landscape and have a healthy appreciation for the mitigating political obstacles that often stand in the way of moving the proverbial reform needle forward. This morning’s Morning Joe broadcast took a different turn, however, prompting me to share some interesting and thought-provoking information by highlighting a way to “pay it forward” if you will, in public education. Politics aside, this morning’s guests included Ariana Huffington, author of soon to be published THRIVE, a self-reflective, self-help book on attaining 21st century success, and DonorsChoose.org Founder/CEO Charles Best, who has made it his life’s mission to address education inequality.
Ms. Huffington’s message this morning was simple, but profound: “More and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office.” Charles Best’s message was equally compelling: “Regardless of your life circumstance, you can become a microphilanthropist in support of public education.” In an interesting partnership, these two civic leaders have joined forces and missions in a positive way.
